BAJA-Our Tips

Should you visit Baja? YES!  Is it Safe? YES.
Favourite Resources (for Rv’ers and campers): Camping Mexico’s Baja by Mike & Terry Church and the app I-Overlander.
Best (Grey) whale watching: There are three spots recommended for this (Ojo de Liebre, San Ignacio Lagoon and Magdalena Bay) but our best experience was at Ojo de Liebre, outside of Guerrero Negro. Ojo had the best price, the shortest motor to get to the whales and a much better road than the road to San Ignacio Lagoon. We were really disappointed with Magdalena Bay because we had to motor for one hour each way to get to the whales and once there the boats chased the whales. In both San Ignacio and Ojo we found the operators VERY respectful of the whales.
Favourite Towns: Our favourite town was Loreto. In Loreto you can go whale watching for blue whales and snorkeling with sea lions and whale sharks. There is also a great boardwalk right along the water and a lovely downtown with an historic church, plenty of craft/gift shops and restaurants. The grocery shopping in Loreto is very good as well, there is even a small health food store which the owner stocks with hard to find foods. Other notable mentions go to La Paz; great whale watching and snorkeling and a really nice Malecon along the water and Todos Santos.
Favourite Campground: Rivera Del Mar in Loreto run by Yolanda. Great customer service, great showers and bathrooms and good wifi-when the campground is not full.
Favourite beach campground: Playa Escondida on Bahia Concepcion (actually all the beaches along this bay are beautiful BUT full of campers) so our second choice would be LaGringa on Bahia Los Angeles which was equally beautiful and had very few campers.
Complaints: Only one, tourists that let their dogs poop on the beach and don’t pick up after them! Grrrrrr! This was especially bad at Los Frijoles.
