We had arrived on the Florida panhandle by February, we loved this part of Florida! It was a beautiful coastal drive to our campground in St. Joseph Peninsula State Park, where we stayed for 3 nights. This campground was great, there were bobcats in the area, sadly we did not see them but we got lucky and saw a pair of great horned owls, more gators and we even saw a shark fishing one evening. We worked our way along the coast and stopped at the Pensacola Naval Aviation Museum which came highly recommended and yes, it was well worth the visit.
We had to keep moving though because we were hoping to meet up with friends in Big Bend NP in Texas. We stopped to tour a battleship in Alabama, the USS Alabama, we both enjoyed this quite a bit, neither of us had ever been on a battleship. Then it was off to Louisiana to walk the French Quarter in New Orleans, nice but we preferred Savannah, Georgia.
On our way to Big Bend we stopped in San Antonio to see The Alamo and walk part of the river walk, both were lovely but the river walk exceeded our expectations, what a gem! We then decided to spend a few nights in Seminole Canyon State Park. The pictographs in Fate Bell Cave were amazing and the hiking trail along the rim was beautiful. The Rim trail takes you past a famous pictograph of a panther in Panther cave and along the banks of the Rio Grande.
We finally arrived in Big Bend on Feb. 15th and stayed until March 2nd. We had high expectations of Big Bend and it did not disappoint! The scenery, the hiking, the driving, Chisos Basin campground, the back country we loved every minute of our time in the park. Words cannot express the beauty so I will let our February flickr album speak for itself.
